Timber Windows That Last A Lifetime

September 4, 2019

Today we visited a Client near Harrogate whose windows were fitted in phases between 2002 and 2004. Manufactured by our specialist fenestration manufacturer they are still looking superb.

These particular windows are made of their standard hardwood, engineered Sapele Mahogany, stained to a dark translucent finish.

It is standard in the industry for stained finishes to have a shorter guarantee than opaque paint finishes. Whilst paint finishes are guaranteed for 10 years, stained finishes come with a 6 year guarantee. This is because UV from sunlight goes directly to the timber and can break the surface down over time on a microscopic level. This in turn can affect the integrity of the finish.

These, however, are 15 and 17 years old. Admittedly there’s been a small amount of maintenance required, as would be expected, but the Client said this has been minimal and only in recent years, so they passed their guarantee period twice over.

Even on the most exposed side of the Client’s home (the front) the timber is in remarkable condition with no signs of degradation. The beadings and glazing bars are intact with no signs of cracking at the joints. Typically, on our competitors’ products, beadings and glazing bars are stuck on individually, and they warp, peel and fall off. These are jointed as standard, which requires more care, time and materials. But, whilst this adds to the initial costings, they can never come off, and they will pay for themselves through much lower maintenance and hassle.

We were also impressed that everything works as it should – hinges, handles, locking systems. One glazing unit was replaced a few years ago as it had ‘blown’, but this is very rare and as such it was replaced at no cost – even though out of guarantee!

The Client is having some alterations to his home carried out and needs some more products. We were pleased to have the opportunity to take some photos and add it to our case studies file, for what we consider to be the best timber fenestration products available in the UK.
